I started building an Alpha Grad in the 1980's before life intervened and I stoped sailing for 25+ Eriyears. I have recommenced the build and the hull is almost complete sooooooo I have been researching paints and finishes.

There is a lot on the web about barrier coats prior to painting. I cannot make my mind up. Does anyone have experienca/knowledge of this. Are any new wooden Grads painted or do they get an epoxy barrier coat first?

There is loads of info on the web but it all becomes very confusing.

I plan to have her on the water in the spring at Silverwings SC where I currently sail a Solo but where there is also a very nice new fibreglass Grad.

Peter,

When you built her, did you roller on a coat of epoxy on the inside and outside of all the panels?

In your position I think I'd use an epoxy primer, and then a two-pack paint.

Preferably sprayed and flatted between each coat.

Thank you. That was my first thoughts but then the more I read the more undecided I became.

I think you are right, it's back to plan A.

Many thanks

Peter
